"Cannot extract the embedded font" in Chinese PDF

Unread post by jeffbronks »

This error message from Adobe Reader has been mentioned before in this forum, but the advice (update the software, set CID Mode to Off) doesn't help me. May I resurrect this question and ask if anyone has any different advice?

The font being complained about is usually Microsoft YaHei. I have discovered a couple of clues:

1. Building the PDF with no fonts embedded (not even common fonts) produces a 4.9 MB PDF that works perfectly. I can then embed the missing fonts using Acrobat Pro and the PDF (only slightly larger at 5.3 MB) still works. This solves my problem but I would prefer if H&M could do the whole job.

2. The broken PDF with embedded fonts created by H&M is 18 MB.

I tried changing the PDF Output reference device (from Microsoft XPS to Adobe PDF) but that didn't help.

Hi Jeff,

Try switching the CID Font Mode in your font embedding settings. If its OFF switch it to Unicode, and vice versa. Also make sure that you have the full support for Asian fonts installed on Windows if you're still on Windows 7 and for Adobe Reader or Acrobat (they will normally automatically ask you to download the font language pack when you open a corresponding PDF). Also make sure that you're on the current version of Help & Manual, which is 6.5.1 Build 2975.

If this doesn't help please mail a small demo project and your .mnl template file to me at support AT ec-software.com (replace the AT with @) and we'll test it for you.
