Context menu item to insert anchor link to same topic

Unread post by upscene »

Hi,

When trying to create a "link" in a topic to an anchor in the same topic, there's quite a few user actions involved.

Currently, this involves:

1) create an anchor
2) optionally highlight text
3) start "Create Link" dialog, this then selects a topic based on the highlighted text or the "New Link" default text of the link, which is always wrong for this new link. ;)
4) search for current topic in the list, using mouse or keyboard
5) then select anchor
6) click OK

When I want to create a link to another topic, I usually highlight the text and drag it on top of the topic in the tree view on the left, this works fine mostly.

However, creating a link to the same topic can be much faster, how about this proposal:

1) highlight text
2) use the context menu, option "Create current topic link" which has a dynamic sub menu that lists the available anchors in the current topic
3) click one of those menu options for the right anchor

All done!

This wouldn't be too hard to create, right?

Hi Martijn,

I agree that this currently involves too many steps. We're going to discuss options for making it simpler in the next major version of HM. Even so, there is actually a quicker way that what you're doing:
  1. Type the text for the link, select it and drag it onto the topic entry in the TOC.
  2. Double-click on the link, select the anchor from the list and click OK

Hi Tim,

Ah yes, obviously I could drag it onto "itself", haven't thought of that yet, yet, this still requires opening the dialog, selecting an anchor and closing the dialog.

That is a lot of steps!

Thanks for discussing it, but the next major version? I just upgraded... :(

Don't worry. That's not due out before early next year. Also, if a major version is released within six months of purchasing or upgrading you get it free anyway. 8)
