Merge Topic Statue

Unread post by JohnAspinwall »

When we copied and pasted a group of topics into our main project Explorer the custom Topic Status color and headings did not transfer. Is there a way to merge Custom Topic Status's?
Thanks, John

Hi John,
Is there a way to merge Custom Topic Status's?
No, because topic status always applies to the individual copy of the topic. So while the status of the original may be one thing, that is not necessarily the case for the copy -- that is the logic behind not copying it. :)

OK, thanks for the reply. Maybe I'll put this on our wish list.

We're in a transitional period during which a lot of material was developed outside our main project.
And we'd like to bring it into our main project with all of its status information.

Thanks, John

Is this feature possible for a future release?

I've discussed this with our developers and although it is still up for consideration it's unlikely to be implemented, at least not in the short term. The main problem is that custom statuses are project attributes, not global attributes. So if you copy the status you would also need to either a) copy custom status definitions to the target project, which would often be something that users don't want, or b) only copy the standard statuses and ignore the custom ones.

So a) would cause problems for some users and b) would be confusing. Option c) would be to have an option for it, but that would be quite a complicated option set to allow for copying or not copying and whether both standard and custom statuses should be copied, and whether customs statuses should be created in the target project or only copied if they already exist and so on and so forth.

So all this would either be annoying in one way or another or add a lot of unnecessary complexity, which is something we always try to avoid. On balance, our developers feel that it's best to leave it as it is, since we have only ever had one complaint (yours) about not copying topic status with the topics ever since topic status was introduced... :?
