Martin's TOC modifier

I have created a Windows utility for my own use to modify a Webhelp TOC. It adds mouse-over tooltips and/or icons to any TOC item, and can divide the TOC into sections with coloured backgrounds and headings. It is suitable for use with TOCs from all H&M skins or none, except the Premium Pack Ver...

Re: Delineator/separator in TOC - chapter without text?

It would greatly enhance our (unfortunately) complicated help output for our (unfortunately) extremely complex program. Ok, Dave. I started on it in your other topic a few weeks ago, and then got side-tracked. I'm easily side-tracked these days. I will get back to it now. :) Anything else? You migh...

Re: Delineator/separator in TOC - chapter without text?

You can do almost anything you like with H&M, if creating HTML output. And make it relatively easy to maintain/update. For example, the Publishing Task Manager includes an option to add Build Events to a publishing task. Which means you can write a Windows utility exe to parse/edit any of the H&...

Re: Sanity check - am I revising TOC number entries right?

Hi Dave,

It's not the end of the world, because if you think anyone might have created a dead link you can easily put a redirect on the server. Ask your IT person to do it for you if necessary. It's extra work, but only takes a minute or so to do.

cheers,

Martin.

Re: Sanity check - am I revising TOC number entries right?

Hi Dave, Another reason you might like to create the topic IDs independently of the titles, is that you can include the topic parent-child nesting in the ID. For example, if you have chapters and topics: Fruit Juice Apple --- Orange --- Bottling Processes in UK --- (The header on the topic page woul...

Hi Dave,

I wouldn't be in favour of that. I get familiar with the ID list I've created and I wouldn't want it to change when I edit the topic titles.

cheers,

Martin.

Re: Sanity check - am I revising TOC number entries right?

I'd go nuts trying to link to 'Unit 5-Children' if it's in the list under an unchanged Topic ID as "Unit-12-Children" Hi Dave, But you won't go nuts if its ID is simply " children ". The ID doesn't need the title number. You edit the ID in the Topic Options tab. cheers, Martin.

Re: Sanity check - am I revising TOC number entries right?

Unfortunately, I do have to put the number in here. My liaison with training is OCD and he's saying, if it's numbered in the training, it has to be numbered in the help file Hi Dave, By all means have numbers in the topic title , and move them around and edit them if you want to. But there is no ne...

Re: Sanity check - am I revising TOC number entries right?

Hi Dave, Unit-16-Methods You don't need the number on the topic ID. Just make it methods_unit . And if you value your sanity when creating links without errors, make the topic ID all lower case and use underscores for spaces. I've been banging on about this on this board for years, and there was one...

Re: Links to popups inside popups - can 1st pop be persisten

Thanks Tim. I understand the difficulty. But it does seem to be a drawback with these skins. There are some types of long page where the ability to jump to and fro among several anchors is definitely needed -- a glossary for example. I can see the difficulty in using the browser's history stack, but...

Re: Is there a way to place a tooltip on a TOC Topic title?

If I'm reading this right, I'd have to run the exe after every update? Hi Dave, Only if you have modified the TOC in the update. If only the topic pages are being edited you could place the modified TOC file in the Baggage files, and it would over-write the one freshly created. Alternatively you co...

Re: Is there a way to place a tooltip on a TOC Topic title?

One of our people has come up with some really good subheads for some existing topics in our help file. Can I attach them as tooltips to the TOC entries, such that, in WebHelp, the reader can hover over the TOC entry and see the nifty subhead? Hi Dave, That's a great idea. I could use that myself -...

If the viewer clicked the link after scrolling well down the page, the viewer had to once again scroll...

Re: Links to popups inside popups - can 1st pop be persisten

Is there a way to keep both the World Parent definition popup AND the System Design definition popup visible at the same time? As it is, I have to go back and click on "World Parent" to open that term's popup again. Hi Dave, What's wrong with the more conventional solution of using anchor...

Re: Expand tooltip availability to include words

Hi Dave, A thing which appears to be a link, but which when clicked does nothing, I would find infuriating, and seeming to be an error. How about an alert box instead? That appears as a message box when the link is clicked , with a close button on it. Create the link as a script link as Tim suggeste...
