John, This annoying problem only turns up on a very, very few W2003 machines, just 3 so far in the last few years. The programmers suspect that it has to do with a Windows service that is interfering with the operation of TNT. The main question is, what happens when the program starts? Does TNT appe...

Hi Markus, Aaahh... You're probably compiling your popups as dual-mode help, with the popups in a WinHelp file so that you can used formatted text and graphics etc. in the popups. The compiler that is not found is the WinHelp compiler, not the HTML Help compiler. Just make sure that the path is poin...

John,

I just contacted the programmers on this and they say that it has recently been discovered that TNT refuses to start on some machines running W2003. The exact cause of this is not yet known, it is under investigation.

Hi Pete,

That is correct, Word hyperlinks are not imported. There is also no tool for doing this for Help & Manual. What you might be able to do is find some tool that converts the Word document to another supported format first with the hyperlinks. HTML would probably be your best bet here.

Try turning CID Font Mode to CID Off . This is a new feature of the updated PDF engine and it appears to be troublesome in some situations. For what it's worth, here's the programmers' documentation of this function: This property enables the support for text written used by Character Identifiers. H...

Andy, Pay scales for help authoring vary very widely. Basically it depends on a) your experience, quality and reputation and b) who you are doing the job for. You can charge much better rates if your client is a big international company and they see you as a quality supplier. On the other end of th...

not all leading blanks are removed, only the first two leading blanks are removed Actually, they're not. If you enter four blanks you will get two blanks plus one blank/  pair in the source code. If you enter twelve blanks you will get two blanks and five blank/  pairs. So what is...

Harvey, This may be possible but it would probably be quite roundabout and complicated because of the way the HTML Help viewer handles printing -- it generates a print version on the fly and only offers to print the entire chapter if you are actually currently in the chapter topic. I always favor si...

Kevin, Your request is very timely: I just completely rewrote all the tutorials that come with Help & Manual and non-scrolling headers are included. If you're not already using version 4.2 update now and then you will find the instructions you need in the new DHTML tutorial project, which is loc...

Susan, Simon,

This is a false positive. The download file is 100% OK. Please either update your spyware scanner or (if you are using the latest version) report the false positive to the manufacturer.

You probably need to update your Help & Manual installation to the current version. The current version converts leading blanks to alternating blanks and   entities. This is the only way to get the correct number of blanks and not make the space non-breaking. Just download the latest ve...

Tim, You are compiling your CHM to a network drive. This has been forbidden in Windows ever since Service Pack 2 for Windows XP came out. If you compile to a local drive on your computer you won't have this problem. For more information and various (partial) fixes see this link: http://helpman.it-au...

Bob, I've just discussed this with the programmers and apparently it's a Microsoft Internet Explorer issue. The HTML generated for the popups by Help & Manual is absolutely OK and will render correctly in all real browsers (Firefox, Mozilla, Safari, Opera, Konqueror...). MSIE apparently has prob...

David, What happens when you open the same CHM on a different computer? Do you get the same result? If it works correctly then either some parts of your Windows installation are hosed or some third-party software is interfering. If it doesn't work correctly on the other machine try installing H&...
