Another possibility is that the temporary files created by H&M4 are not being deleted when you close the project file. Next time you try to reopen the file, H&M finds the temporary files already there and assumes the project is already open. I had a similar thing happen to me with Word some ...

Hi George, Just some thoughts that I haven't had time to test: What happens when you set the alignment to Right? Does it expand out of the box to cover the vertical line and Heading 1 text, or does it push them farther to the left? Can you allow wrapping and let the box expand downward? It looks lik...

Hi Ron, For what it's worth, I've been using H&M since mid August, and already I've been able to convert four print manuals from Word format. (In addition to my other tasks here at work.) One of those manuals was 150 pages long, the others around 100 pages. I now produce them in PDF format for p...

I agree with both suggestions. I would also like to suggest that the new hotspot appear in the center of the current view, not always at upper left. This would eliminate a lot of scrolling and dragging when working with large images. (Smaller images are better, but there are times when I can't avoid...

Martin, Very nice suggestion! Direct and understandable. I have simply been putting in a caption, such as "Click on a field name to see its description" and have used IfNot conditionals so that the captions doen't appear in the pdf version. (I use the same source for both online help and p...

Hi Matt, What fixed it for me was to upgrade to the latest build of the software. If I remember right, it is currently at 715. You can check it with the Help > About option in H&M. There is also a Check option that will check the EC web site to see if you have the latest version and will offer t...

I copied the chm files to another computer and tested them there. The same problem occurs - no icons in the TOC. But it's not critical - the files still run and are still usable. Waiting a day or two is no problem. 8)

Tim, I will leave the registry alone. Too many opportunities to wreak havoc!

Alexander, That's a good feature. I will make use of it immediately. Too bad other software developers don't offer it.

Thanks both,
Dean

cleaning out Reopen list

Is there any way to clean old files out of the list displayed under the File > Reopen option? I'd love to get rid of the references to all of the test files I created when I was first learning how to use H&M.

thanks

Rebooting didn't fix it (no surprise). Any other ideas greatly appreciated.

Hi Tim, No, the nav pane is open. I can still see the plus and minus boxes to expand and contract topics that have child entries, I can still see the topic headings, and these controls all work as they should. It is only the topic icons that are missing. Most peculiar. :? I suspect that it has nothi...

topic icons not appearing in external windows

I have been using a javascript function to open topics from other chm files in an external window (see thread http://helpman.it-authoring.com/viewtopic.php?t=3610). Today I noticed that the page and book icons that normally accompany each topic in the TOC do not appear in the external windows. It do...

Tim, You were right, as usual. :) I'm not sure why, but I did not have full write access to the Help&Manual program folder. I fixed it and the customization is staying in place.

Thanks

customizing tools permanently

I customized the tool button layout in H&M4, only to have it revert to the default when I reopened a different project. I re-customized on a blank editor screen (no project open), and that seemed to carry over to another project, but now I find I'm back to the default. Is there a way to customiz...
