Warning: Adobe Digital Editions Spying on Users

Unread post by Tim Green »

A recent article on The Digital Reader reveals that Adobe’s eBook software Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) is spying on users, tracking their reading habits and sending data about their eBook libraries back to the Adobe servers. This has been confirmed for the latest version ADE 4. The previous version 3 is probably safe.

Just to be clear, this includes not just eBooks opened in ADE4, but also eBooks stored in Calibre and every other ePub eBook anywhere on your hard disk.

Adobe is Spying on Users, Collecting Data on Their eBook Libraries

Adobe Digital Editions is a widely used eBook reading software for Windows, particularly for ePub and PDF, which are both formats published by Help & Manual. This news thus affects you directly if you use ADE to review eBooks created with Help & Manual and it also affects the readers of your publications, if they use ADE. If the current version of ADE is on your computer it is collecting information about your reading habits and all your eBooks and sending it back to Adobe.

We use ADE for proofreading ourselves but it is not linked to Help & Manual in any way. Actually, a much better solution is the free Calibre eBook reader, and as it stands at the moment we highly recommend it.
