Translation with SDL Trados (configuration file)

Unread post by Alexander Halser »

As promised a couple of weeks ago, the INI file for the SDL Trados TagEditor is available. This INI file is for Trados TagEditor 7.5.0. It could work with earlier versions too, but this was not tested.

Using the configuration file with Trados

To make the Help & Manual INI file available for Trados, perform the following steps:
 • Download the file attached to this posting
 • Unpack the archive and copy the INI file into your Trados folder, for instance c:\Program Files\SDL International\T2006\TT
 • Open the Trados tag editor
 • Click Tools, then Tag Settings, then press the Open button
 • Locate the file HelpAndManual for SDL Trados.ini and add it to the tag files list
When you open any of the Help & Manual XML files with the tag editor, it should recognize the XML by the root element "helpproject" or "topic" and use the correct initialization file.

Translation with the Trados TagEditor

Most of the XML tags are self-explanatory. There are, however, a few possible caveats:

In general, you translate only text between tags, you never translate any attributes of the tags.

The XML tag
which is used for image captions is formatted as "CDATA". This XML formatting option retains line breaks. While the tag in the Trados tag editor is appropriately defined as "CDATA", Trados still displays the formatting brackets around the text. This looks like:

Code: Select all

Image Caption
Note that the opening part and the closing part must not be translated nor removed. Only the text within these brackets is translatable. The same procedure applies to some values of the configuration overhead in the main XML file.

Translation of the main XML file (<projectname>.xml): This file contains many configuration settings from the Project > Properties dialog. Some of them are translatable, some are not. Whether you can/must translate a setting, depends on the attribute of the tag: all translatable tags have the attribute translate="true".
So, if you aren't sure how to proceed with a particular tag, switch to the full tag view in Trados, to reveal the attributes.

Import the XML File from Trados back to HM

Unread post by kuk »

I have translated the XML file with Trados Tag editor and with your ini file.
When I import the XML file from Trados in HM, I get this error message:

Compiler Messages

Error while reading file U:\Projekte\COSIMIR PLC Advanced 4.3\Assistant Entw\H&M\COSIMIR PLC Adv Getting Started\German\XML_Source\Template_EN.xml
Incorrect close tag in element %TITLE%

Do you have an idea?

best regards

Is this the translation that came back from Trados or the original source? It imports fine into Help & Manual (build 1062). Several links are dead, but I can't say if this is a result from the translation or if they were wrong before.

Hi! I came across this forum when searching for an ini file for tag editor. I was going to download the attached file from your message but this is what I get under "Attachments": "The extension zip has been deactivated and can no longer be displayesd." I was wondering if you still have this file and if you can share it one more time. I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

Hi Cecilia,

You don't need that any more, all the information above is out of date. The files for Trados referenced here are only relevant in Help & Manual and they are now included with Help & Manual. You can find them in the /Templates/Translation folder in the main Help & Manual program directory.

Please don't post such huge quotes from the thread that is already visible. That only makes your posting less readable. 8)
