line break prevention

Unread post by Robert McConnell »

I have a line of the form:

... (Section 2.2).

How can I insure that no line break will be inserted between 'Section' and '2.2'?

Hi Rob,

Just turn off word wrap in your paragraph formatting options. It's better to do this manually rather than in a style -- if you use a style with word wrap turned off you need to be sure that it's not used on a line that might need to wrap.

line break prevention

Unfortunately when I try that it causes the entire paragraph to not wrap and therefore run beyond the right margin, at least in pdf output mode.

Am I missing something?

Try using a non-breaking space where you don't want to break.

Alt+0160 inserts a non-breaking space in most situations.

i.e., hold down Alt, enter 0160 on the number pad, release Alt.

A non-break space would be the way to go but when I tried Alt+0160 that inserted 'á' on my system.

A somewhat inelegant approach is to substitute a non-space character and then assign a white font color to it.

Still hoping for a better way.

Oops, I goofed, I did not have the numlock set on the keypad. Alt+0160 does seem to have the desired effect. Sorry about that.
