When are hyphens converted to underscores in topic ids?

HM5 served us well, now its time has come and it has been replaced... If you have HM5 questions, please post them here.

When are hyphens converted to underscores in topic ids?

Unread post by Gary Rich »

Previously we were under the impression that any hyphen characters in help and manual topic ids were converted to underscores in the generated chm file.
However I recently inspected the contents of some of these using 7zip and it appears that some of our chm files still have hyphens in
the web page names and some have had them changed to underscores.

Is this configurable somewhere e.g. in the application configuration or within templates???

We are using Help and manual 6.5 & 6.5.1

Hi Gary,

This will be the result of compiling with the more recent version of Help & Manual. Since hyphens are valid in HTML file names they are now left unchanged, in response to many user requests. This is not going to be changed, because you can choose which character to use in the HTML file by changing the topic ID directly (hyphen produces a hyphen, underscore produces an underscore). In the next major version of Help & Manual there will also be an option to choose the replacement character for invalid characters in topic IDs (spaces, accented characters, umlauts etc). You will then be able to choose between a hyphen or an underscore as the replacement character.
