buttle indentation

Unread post by William_ »

Hi,

The indentation of bullet lists (via 'Increase Left Indent / Numbering Level) does not work, I get the message of:
"This list has 1 level(s) - cannot increase list level!"

Well it does not work as expected. If you select an entire list then the increase indent button works, moving the entire list out by one level - therefore you need to make new lists for each non-contiguous indentation level

Hi William,

I agree that this is a little unintuitive, but it is actually working as it should. In lists the Indent tool is only available in "outline" lists that have different definitions for different levels. It doesn't actually control the indent. To indent a list you need to change the paragraph indent settings of the first item in the list (that controls the indent for the entire list), either manually or with a style. See this topic in the help for details.

Thanks, to be perfectly honest the instructions do not seem clear or plain wrong and seem to deal with some obscure work around for some unknown reason.
"• If you want to use the indent tools on single-level lists you must first select the entire list and "turn off" the list by clicking on the bulleted or numbered list tool. After changing the indent with the indent tool you can then turn the list on again."
I created a test list of items, set up the indenting with the indent button, however selecting the entire list and clicking the bulletise button displays it as an unindented list of bulleted items.

I end up with the following xml

Code: Select all

    <list id="69" type="ul" listtype="bullet" formatstring="&#183;" format-charset="SYMBOL_CHARSET" levelreset="true" legalstyle="false" startfrom="1" styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:0px; tabstops:none; font-family:Symbol; font-size:10pt; color:#000000;">
      <li styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:0px; tabstops:none;"><text styleclass="Normal" translate="true">test1</text></li>
      <li styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:0px; tabstops:none;"><text styleclass="Normal" translate="true">test2</text></li>
      <li styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:24px; tabstops:none;"><text styleclass="Normal" translate="true">test3</text></li>
      <li styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:24px; tabstops:none;"><text styleclass="Normal" translate="true">test4</text></li>
      <li styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:48px; tabstops:none;"><text styleclass="Normal" translate="true">test5</text></li>
      <li styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:48px; tabstops:none;"><text styleclass="Normal" translate="true">test6</text></li>
      <li styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:48px; tabstops:none;"><text styleclass="Normal" translate="true">test7</text></li>
    </list>
However if I restart and select each set of contiguous indentation level items and click the bulletise button then the end result is satisfactory.

Code: Select all

    <list id="70" type="ul" listtype="bullet" formatstring="&#183;" format-charset="SYMBOL_CHARSET" levelreset="true" legalstyle="false" startfrom="1" styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:0px; tabstops:none; font-family:Symbol; font-size:10pt; color:#000000;">
      <li styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:0px; tabstops:none;"><text styleclass="Normal" translate="true">test1</text></li>
      <li styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:0px; tabstops:none;"><text styleclass="Normal" translate="true">test2</text></li>
    </list>
    <list id="71" type="ul" listtype="bullet" formatstring="&#183;" format-charset="SYMBOL_CHARSET" levelreset="true" legalstyle="false" startfrom="1" styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:24px; tabstops:none; font-family:Symbol; font-size:10pt; color:#000000;">
      <li styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:24px; tabstops:none;"><text styleclass="Normal" translate="true">test3</text></li>
      <li styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:24px; tabstops:none;"><text styleclass="Normal" translate="true">test4</text></li>
    </list>
    <list id="72" type="ul" listtype="bullet" formatstring="&#183;" format-charset="SYMBOL_CHARSET" levelreset="true" legalstyle="false" startfrom="1" styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:48px; tabstops:none; font-family:Symbol; font-size:10pt; color:#000000;">
      <li styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:48px; tabstops:none;"><text styleclass="Normal" translate="true">test5</text></li>
      <li styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:48px; tabstops:none;"><text styleclass="Normal" translate="true">test6</text></li>
      <li styleclass="Normal" style="text-indent:0px; margin-right:0px; margin-left:48px; tabstops:none;"><text styleclass="Normal" translate="true">test7</text></li>
    </list>
Are you stating this behaviour imitates some standard windows software handling of indenting of 'unordered lists'? Personally I steer clear of the pointers in the top bar.

Hi William,
I created a test list of items, set up the indenting with the indent button, however selecting the entire list and clicking the bulletise button displays it as an unindented list of bulleted items.
It's actually quite simple: The indent of the first paragraph in the list is applied to the entire list. You can indent all the paragraphs if you like, but you don't have to. So if you indent the first paragraph with the indent button (or with a style or manually in the paragraph settings for that paragraph) and then select multiple paragraphs and turn them into a list, then the entire list will have the indent of the indented paragraph, IF that paragraph is the first paragraph in the list.

If you use a style or manual paragraph formatting you can adjust the indent without "turning off" the list. Inside lists the indent buttons are not indent buttons -- they're list level changers.

Do the programmer(s) responsible ever look at the forum?

Yes, regularly. If you have requests that you want to make sure they will see it's best to post them to the Wish List section, because they are all subscribed to that and receive new postings there by email. :)
