Protection available in the tool

Unread post by Prajakta Narkar »

Hi,

Is there any in-built protection available in the tool for securing the contents in the help file.

That depends on the output format, not on Help & Manual. Generally speaking, however, adding "security" to documentation or eBooks is usually a waste of time and money. It doesn't stop dishonest customers and it annoys your honest customers, so the net effect is negative.
  • The Microsoft CHM format does not have any protection and so you cannot add them there because it is physically impossible.
  • You can configure password protection for PDF and EWriter eBooks. EWriter eBooks also support an expiry date and a number of other security features. See the settings for these formats in Configuration > Publishing Options for details.
  • Word DOCX files do not support security.
  • ePub/iBooks and Mobi/Kindle eBooks only support security added later by a service provider. In the case of Kindle books the security is added automatically by Amazon when it is put on the Kindle store. Adding security to ePub is expensive and complicated.
  • You can't add security to WebHelp because it is just a collection of normal HTML files, which also don't support security. You need to put it in a secured location on your web server with a login.
