HTML Help Search Issues

Unread post by tinat »

Hi,
When I try to do a search for a certain term that is in the manual I am not getting results.

In the manual I have the phrase: folder named pixel_density_level_override.ccs

If I search for pixel_density_level - the search returns nothing.
However the following searches all return the expected result:
pixel_density_level_override.ccs
pixel_density_level_override
pixel

In Webhelp, if I search for pixel_density_level it does return the expected result.

I am using Version 7.3.0 Build 4102
PP 3.20
Thanks, Tina

Hi Tina,

I'm afraid this is a limitation of Microsoft's ancient CHM system, which hasn't been updated or corrected since it was originally released with Windows 98 -- instead, they have just modified later versions of Windows to allow the creaky old CHM system to keep working in them unchanged. The search function in the CHM viewer has a number of quirks, including the one you are running up against here. It's a non-editable Windows component, and this behavior can't be changed, unfortunately... :?

Thanks for the quick response Tim! It's a reason I can take back to the powers that be!

You might want to have a look at Help+Manual's EWriter format as an alternative to CHM. It combines the benefits of CHM and WebHelp and eliminates the disadvantages of both:

Is there any chance for an EWriter reader for OSX?
I would love to change our documentation from PDF to EWriter, but we have about 30% Mac users.

I'm afraid that's not on the cards at the moment -- but it might happen in the future, although it would be impossible to provide any time frame for it at the moment.
