spell check

Unread post by cedric peasebody »

New user - latest version.

Spell check is painfully slow.
The red underline appears quickly but it takes seconds of hovering to bring up suggestions.
Fast PC - other apps running very quickly.

Is this an issue with the latest version or has it always been like this?

Only base English UK dic installed.

Anyone know of a work around to this?

Hi Cedric,

This is definitely not a known issue. However, are you only hovering and waiting for suggestions? You can wait all day for that. You need to right-click to bring up the context menu. :)

No,

If I type a spelling mistake, I may have typed another 15 words before the app identifies my mistake.
Not a big problem as I can see the red underline when proof reading.

It would be nice if the underline appeared within a word or two but I understand everything is a compromise.

I really just wanted to confirm that slow recognition of spelling mistakes is normal in this app (not a result of a misconfiguration).

Thanks

Hi Cedric,
If I type a spelling mistake, I may have typed another 15 words before the app identifies my mistake.
Then something is definitely slowing you down. There are a couple of things that can do this. The main one is having a lot of embedded images in your project. Embedded images are created when you copy and paste images from programs like Word into the Help & Manual editor. They can be a serious cause of slow editing performance. A couple of embedded images are OK, but you need to know that they take up a huge amount of memory and computer resources (really, really huge -- many times their own uncompressed size) and having more than a few of them can slow down editing and will also unnecessarily bloat your project files. Images get embedded when you paste text and images from other programs. Since Help & Manual 6 the program automatically prompts the user to convert embedded images to external files on insertion and this prompt should be taken seriously.

You should definitely convert all embedded images to external files by right-clicking on them and selecting the convert option. You can identify embedded images by selecting them -- when selected, they do not turn "negative" in the same way as normal images. You can also locate embedded images by generating a full report with image references using the Report Tool in the Project tab, then search for the word "embedded" in the results. You can then jump to the topic in the project to convert the images by clicking on the live link to the topic (topic ID as a hyperlink) in the next column of the report.

Embedded images are also "dumb" and do not support any of the normal image features available in Help+Manual, like scaling, conversion to toggles, hotspot links and so on. They should really be avoided.
