When selecting 'Show History' for a topic an 'Abstract Error' message is returned.
As far as I can see this is only happening with one topic which does have child entries but is not encountered elsewhere - do you know what is causing this?

It's impossible to answer questions like this without looking at the topic that is triggering the error. Please mail a demo copy of the project to support AT ec-software.com (replace the AT with @) so that we can investigate it. Save as a single-file .hmxz with the Save As... option in the File menu, then edit it to remove any unnecessary topics before mailing and mail in the .hmxz file.
However, if you are using an earlier version of Help+Manual than current (7.3.2 Build 4260) please update first to see if the problem persists. You can check your version with Help > About and the update installer is available here:
