Restoring .hmxz file

Unread post by Irina Ivanova »

Hello!
I don't have much hope on the matter, but still have to try and ask.
An .hmxz file was accidentially overwritten by another version of it. Is it somehow possible to restore the original file?
Irina.

Hi Irina,
An .hmxz file was accidentially overwritten by another version of it. Is it somehow possible to restore the original file?
Not if it was overwritten, sorry. A great solution for things like this that has saved me many times is AJC Active Backup. It is inexpensive and provides outstanding backup performance. This is a program produced by one of our customers and we do not receive any credit or anything else for promoting it; we just think it's an excellent solution:

http://www.ajcsoft.com/active-backup.htm

AJC saves very compact, compressed backups on any drive or target you specify. It updates the changes every time you save and keeps the backups compact by only saving the differences between one version and the next (as well as compressing). Unlike other backup systems, that only keep the last version you saved, it is fully incremental. If you work in the uncompressed HMXP project format it allows you to return to any version of any file in your project at any time. For example: If you discover that you want the version of a topic that you deleted or edited three weeks ago, you can get it without changing anything else. (If you use single-file HMXZ projects you can only restore the entire project, of course.)

You can set it up to monitor specific folders and file types, so you can use it to automatically back up other kinds of files as well.

If you have the Professional version of Help & Manual it's also good practice to save and work on your projects in the uncompressed HMXP format. This saves every topic and all the other project components as separate, plain-text XML files. When you use this format, it's not possible to damage your entire project by damaging a single file, and even if individual files do get damaged you can still recover the undamaged portions because they are plain text. To save in HMXP open your project, select Save As... in the File menu and select the uncompressed XML/HMXP format and save to an empty folder. (You can add other files and folders to the new project folder later, but it needs to be empty when you first save your project.)
