Trial version - any limitations (other than text scrambling)

Unread post by Dorte Jacobsen »

Hi Tim,

In the trial version, are there any other limitations than the scrambled text output?
I am struggling with Webhelp publishing options (like replacing the default icons, changing the page layout). I may be going about it in the wrong way but would like you to confirm that these options are supposed to work in the trial version also.

Thanks,
Dorte

Hi Dorte,

The only restrictions in the trial version apart from text scrambling are random disabling of hyperlinks in the output and insertion of a copyright message in every page.

Replacing the default icons depends on the output format. In CHM output they can't be replaced at all because the Microsoft CHM viewer has a hard-wired set of icons that can't be modified. They promised to make this editable when they released the viewer with Windows 98. They never kept this promise and never updated the CHM system. It is still exactly the same system it was in Windows 98.

In WebHelp you need to change the default icons in the .hmskin skin file, not in the project. When you use a skin all the skin settings and templates completely replace the corresponding settings and templates in the project, so settings made there will not have any effect. The skin file can be edited just like a project file and everything that is included can be found in the same places. The setting for the icons is in the Project Explorer, down in Configuration > Publishing Options > WebHelp > Navigation. Most skins use their own set of three custom icons. To see the icons you set in the TOC in your project you need to switch those off.

If you configure the icon option or anything else in the skin you need to save a copy of the .hmskin file (ideally in your project folder) and then select that copy when you publish. To do that click on the Select Skin bar in the Publish screen and use the Open Skin option in the menu, not one of the preview images.
