Default TOC Icons

Unread post by Anna Ryut »

Hi there!

I know that in H&M projects it is possible to change the topic icon (using the old set of icons for Windows 98).
But when we export our project in HTML only our customized icons for collapsed/expanded and topic entry are published.
What can we do, if we want to add more icons for topics, f.e. for features that are supposed to be in future releases of the product? Can we add styles or pictures for TOC entries?

Hi Anna,
But when we export our project in HTML only our customized icons for collapsed/expanded and topic entry are published.
This is just because those icons are activated in the publishing skin by default. You can change the setting in the skin to use the custom icons from the Help+Manual TOC in your project (except in some Premium Pack skins):
  1. Open the .hmskin file of the skin you are usin gin Help+Manual and in the Project Explorer on the left navigate down to Configuration > Publishing > WebHelp > Navigation.
  2. At the bottom of the settings screen activate the button for "Use default icons"
  3. Save the .hmskin file and make sure you select the version you have edited the next time you publish.

Yes, we use our customized icons in this way.
But we need to export more than 3 types of customized icons.
F.e. by default we can add icons for:
1. Collapsed topics
2. Expanded topics
3. Topics entry

and we want to continue the count:
4. one more topic icon
5. one more topic icon

Hi Anna,

By default, either you use 3 and only 3 customized icons, or you use the icons from the HM TOC.

However, there is a way to replace the icons chosen in the TOC with your own, but only in WebHelp., You can't actually replace the icons in the selection list but you can replace them with your own icons in your WebHelp output by adding alternative icons with the correct names to your Baggage in your project or skin. (Note again that your custom icons cannot used in CHM output because the Microsoft CHM viewer only supports its own standard set of icons and nothing else.)

First check that the custom icons option for WebHelp is switched OFF, otherwise you will only get the three custom icons defined there for closed book, open book and topic. This setting is in Project Explorer > Configuration> Publishing Options > WebHelp > Navigation (in your project if you are not using a skin, in your .hmskin file if you are using a skin).

To replace the icons you simply need to know that the icons displayed in the selection list are numbered from top to bottom and left to right, and that the icon files are called "ciconx.png", where x is the number of the icon. So to replace icon no. 7 you would use a file called "cicon7.png".

To replace the icons simply create your own GIF icon files and call them cicon1.png, cicon2.png, cicon3.png and so on, and add these files to the Baggage Files section of your project or your .hmskin file. These files will then overwrite the ones generated by Help & Manual when you publish your WebHelp, thus replacing them.

WARNING: Don't use the "two state" icons (folders, +/- etc) for single topics. That confuses users and can cause errors.
