Print Topic Footer CHM

Unread post by alanmcd »

When you print a topic from the CHM file, you get a very cryptic footer
mk:@MSITStore: plus path etc

Is there a way to format this output header and footer?

Hi Alan,

The simplest solution to this is to provide a downloadable PDF version for people who want to print. CHM is an obsolete help format that Microsoft has not maintained or updated since it was originally released with Windows 98. Among its other failings, its printing capabilities are, shall we say politely, not optimal. It would be best if the print option could be disabled completely to ensure that users never try to use it, but unfortunately that isn't possible.

The HM skins for CHM will format the page in a printer-friendly way when you print from CHM, but they can only access the actual page content. Everything outside that is inaccessible, including the headers and footers.

The content definition for printed headers and footers in CHMs is controlled by Internet Explorer. You (or your user) can redefine it in IE. The updated definition will apply to all pages whether they are printed from IE or from CHM.

Steps are:
  1. Shift-right-click a page in IE or a topic in CHM and select 'Print preview...' from the popup menu

  2. Click the gear button on the Print Preview menubar to display the Page Setup dialog

  3. Change the URL footer to display another value, or simply -Empty-

  4. Save and print

Alternatively, you can turn off the headers and footers each time you print. That's not a persistent setting. In Step 2 above, you click the button to the right of the gear button to toggle this.
