Numbered list paragraph formatting

Unread post by Ga Bowen »

I'm having an absolute nightmare with numbered lists at the moment.

My first problem is that I want to format a Styled numbered list like this:

1.__Step
2.__Step
____2.1__Step
____2.2__Step
3.__Step

etc.

But I cannot format a Style for the indented paragraph. H+M just seems to be ignoring everything I'm changing.

You can even see there that the indent sliders are being ignored.

It can be bodged using tabs, but I really don't want to do that as it adds problems to other styled paragraphs.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Ga,
It can be bodged using tabs,
Actually, it can't, because tabs don't exist in HTML. They will only work in PDF and DOCX, so you shouldn't use them except for moving down to a lower list level. Lists have special formatting and indentation behavior that you need to be aware of. There is only ONE indent for the entire list and it is controlled by the indent setting in the FIRST list item. That controls the indents for the entire list. So you need to make the indent large enough to encompass the largest number or bullet that is going to occur in the list. The easiest way to do this is to create a paragraph stye with a hanging indent and apply it to the entire list. Then you don't have to reformat if you split the list into two lists.

See this topic in the help for details
