What am I missing?
I don't understand how a numbered list is practical in any way.
Here is what I did in Word, the worst DTP package known to man, in 2 minutes:
Here's what I've done in H+M this entire afternoon:
It's completely unusable and means I'm having to actually change the structure of my document to accomodate H+M.
Don't even get me started on changing list formatting with tables and images.
It wouldn't be so bad if I could just use a table, but let's not even go there.
Is there something in the pipework to fix this in the future?

Hi Ga,
Don't worry, this is solvable. What you're missing is the way that Help+Manual handles list indents. There is a small default indent in all lists that is just enough for single-digit items and small bullets. For anything else you need to apply a custom hanging indent to the FIRST item in the list. That then applies for the entire list. See here for full details:
