Coming soon: Normalize Imported Styles

Unread post by Tim Green »

When you import HTML or CHM to a Help+Manual project your formatting comes in as inline formatting. You then have to use the Create Style from Selection function to create a style from the imported formatting and manually apply it to all the appropriate paragraphs in your project. This can be a lot of work if you have a lot of text and formatting. A new function is coming to the Premium Pack Toolbox that is going to make this significantly easier, provided your imported HTML also used style names. You just need to create paragraph styles in the editor from model paragraphs, then the Normalize tool will convert all paragraphs in the project containing the imported style name to that style. Of course, this can also be used to strip manual formatting from existing projects as well, significantly reducing the tag count.

What the new Normalize tool does:
  • Locates paragraphs containing any text tagged with the specified style. This can be either a <text> element in the paragraph or the paragraph itself.
  • Tag all the text in the paragraph and the paragraph with that style.
  • Remove all inline formatting from the text elements and paragraph (bold/italics/underlining can optionally be left in place).
  • Optionally set other styles for links and toggles in the paragraph (otherwise they are also set to the paragraph style).
  • Combine all consecutive text elements without additional formatting.
This new tool can already process the new Tidy XML format with reduced tags for easier translation coming in Help+Manual 7.3. I'd be interested to hear if anyone is interested in this. 8)

Hi Tim,

Is this function now available, or if not, when will it be?
