Image suffix collisions cause wrong image to display

Unread post by Mike Linacre »

There are many image suffixes allowed. Good!
But some are converted to other suffixes when they are published. Not so good :-(
For instance, myimage.bmp in HM8 (and probably earlier versions) is converted to myimage.png when it is published to Webhelp. This is OK except when myimage.png already exists as a different image. Then either the original myimage.bmp or myimage.png is displayed with the wrong image.

Is there ...
1) a list anywhere of which suffixes convert to other suffixes in the different publication formats
2) an easy way to discover when there are collisions between two different images during the publishing cycle

Thanks :-)

Hi Mike,

I think you are referring to file extensions, not suffixes, which would be in the name itself. 8) This is a standard issue in Help+Manual that is caused by the way the program handles images. Since image formats often need to be converted on output, images with the same name should always be considered to be duplicates, irrespective of what the extension is.
1) a list anywhere of which suffixes convert to other suffixes in the different publication formats
In WebHelp and CHM this also depends on your image conversion settings in HTML Export Options. All non-HTML formats must always be converted (BMP, IPP, PSD, TIF, PCD and other non-HTML bitmaps). What they are converted to depends on your export settings. For example, if you select PNG only, then JPG and GIF will also be converted to PNG. PDF supports PNG and BMP natively, but everything else must be converted.
2) an easy way to discover when there are collisions between two different images during the publishing cycle
Not at the moment, sorry... :?

Thanks, Tim.

Apologies about "extensions". Please extend me forgiveness!

Am scanning down the Full Report listing of images looking for culprits. Found about 30 in one project.
