Can I add seventh topic level (%Heading 7%) into a pdf template? It is not allowed now.

Hi Andrew,

In PDF the TOC is limited to a maximum of 6 levels. This is a physical limit that you cannot overcome. It's actually already too many levels. Most users won't read anything below level 4. 8)

However, if you absolutely must have more levels there are a couple of tricks you can use:

Internal lower levels

The limit on the number of levels is only on "full" topics and the print-style TOC that Help+Manual creates at the beginning of the document. The interactive "bookmarks" TOC displayed on the left by PDF reader can go as deep as you like. So instead of creating full topics for level 7 and below, you do this:
  1. Create a heading in the existing topics for the lower levels.
  2. Add an anchor to the left of the heading
  3. Add a link to the anchor in the TOC using the TOC Link option in the Add Topic dialog. To do this, like to the topic containing the anchor, then select the anchor from the list for that topic in the dialog
  4. Export as Word file
In Word you can also have more levels. If you export as a Word file and create your PDF from Word you can also have a TOC with as many levels as you like.
