You might think that these two formats are part of the Internet's public domain heritage and that using JPEG and GIF compression technology in your applications is a completely trouble-free option. Not any more, it isn't. However, as JPEG.ORG and the ZDNET article explain, all may not be lost on the JPG front yet, even though maverick firm Forgent has already collected millions of dollars in 'royalties' from scared software and hardware companies.
