Build Agent Licensing

Unread post by Colin Bowern »

Many software development organizations are using continuous integration servers (aka build servers) to create the final output. In our structure we check-in the H&M content into a Subversion store. With every commit the TeamCity build server instructs a build agent to check out, compile, test, and package the product. Included in that process is the publishing of the help content through the MSBuild script. We tried using a Professional license on the build agent but the restrictions on using a virtual environment prevented us from doing so. Now we are using a shared server license. As you might guess if we are all out of concurrent licenses the build fails which isn't good because breaking the build is not good when it could have been prevented.

Many development tools have moved to a model of either charging a reduced fee for a build agent (which is responsible for compiling / producing output rather than editing like TypeMock's licensing model) or including it for free when the entire team is licensed (like Telerik's licensing model). Given that help and manual content should be a first class citizen in any given product development I would like to see the licensing opened up to allow participating in the CI process.

Hi Tim,

Our software company is considering an upgrade to Help & Manual 7, primarily for its support of Subversion--but our developers want to use a build agent, as Colin describes.

Has this functionality been slated for an upcoming Help & Manual release?

Thanks,

We now have a special solution for this in Help+Manual 7, depending on your license setup. Please contact me at support AT ec-software.com (replace the AT with @) for further details. 8)
