Variables in Output File Name

Unread post by Andre.Greeff »

Something makes me think this has been requested before (possibly even by me), but a quick search doesn't show any threads covering this that I can bump..

What are the chances of being allowed to use Text Variables from within H&M to generate the name of a generated file such as a PDF manual?

All our documents are assigned a unique product code when they're first approved, followed by an appended "revision" code whenever changes are made. Our procedures state that the file I use must also contain said code and revision in the file name itself.. If I were only maintaining a small number of manuals, this wouldn't be an issue, but manually naming the files does start getting rather tedious when it's an average of 3 to 5 manuals for 9 different products.

I already store both <%docnum%> and <revnum%> in each project since I need to reference them from multiple output templates.. If at all possible, I'd love to publish to PDF using something like the following to calculate a file name:

Code: Select all

<%docnum%>_<%revnum%> - <%title%> - <%summary%>.pdf
Pretty please can we have this..? It would make life so very much more wonderful. :D

Hi Andre,

This is on the list for consideration in HM 7. I can't promise that it will be implemented, but the chances are quite good. To a certain extent you could already achieve this by publishing externally with batch files, but they wouldn't be able to read variables from your projects, of course...
