Link in master file for topic

Unread post by Iwona Politea »

After creating the link in the "master file" to the topic in the child file in the multi-TOC project and compiling the project, the link does not display, only the message appears "Make sure the web address //ieframe.dll/dnserrordiagoff.htm# is correct".
What can be the cause and how to fix it?

Hi Iwona,

You didn't say what output format you are using (WebHelp, CHM, PDF, eWriter, Word...) but from the error message it is most likely to be CHM. There are two questions here:

1) How did you make the link to the child project?
It should be a normal topic link, using the "Help File: " option at the bottom of the Link tool dialog. You select the child help file there and then you can select the topic you want to link to.

2) How is the child project merged with the Master?
If you can see the table of contents of the child in the Master TOC then the child is being merged into the Master when you publish to create one large CHM file. Then it is very important that there are no duplicate topic IDs in the two projects. If there are you will get many errors and topics will not be found because the topics with the same names are overwriting each other when you publish.

If you cannot see the table of contents of the child in the Master when you are editing, then you are creating runtime merging CHM. Then you need to publish the child CHM separately and both the master and child CHMs must be in the same folder for topics in both to be displayed and found. Also, the child and Master CHM names must be exactly the same as the projects from which they are created. The links use the file names to find the topics in the files, and if they don't match the link will be looking for a topic in a CHM file that cannot be found.
