WebHelp URLs

Unread post by Praveen Polavarapu »

Hello. I exported some projects as WebHelp.

I would like to have the URLs for the topics in these exported projects to be displayed in the same way as it does in Help+Manual Online Help.
The URL in the Online Help changes when a different topic is selected in the TOC. For example:
https://www.helpandmanual.com/help/index.html
https://www.helpandmanual.com/help/hm_introduction.html
https://www.helpandmanual.com/help/hm_intro_about.html
https://www.helpandmanual.com/help/hm_intro_why.html

However in my exported WebHelp projects, the URL remains the same even when different topics are selected in the TOC:
https://www.example-domain.com/H+M%20Projects/Software/index.html

How can I get my WebHelp projects to also show the topic URL as it does in the Online Help?

Hi Praveen,

The online version of the Help+Manual documentation now uses a Premium Pack V3 responsive skin. In standard WebHelp the URL does not change because you are always on the same page. Since so much information needs to be displayed on the same page the components are separate files that are loaded into iFrames within the page (table of contents, index page, search page, topic pages). This is the case in the standard templates and free standard skins provided with Help & Manual. However, the standard skins have the option to show the correct URL of the current topic at the bottom of the topic page so that you can refer to it. You can see this in Help+Manual's own documentation here:

https://www.helpandmanual.com/help/

The standard skins with this option have the word "responsive" or "integrated" in their names.

The skins in the Help & Manual Premium Pack add-on use HTML5 and URL rewriting to solve this problem. In these skins the current URL is always shown correctly in the browser's address: field. In the latest V3 responsive skins, no iFrames are used for the topic pages any more and the URL is just the topic page, which also changes directly as you browse. You can learn more about the Premium Pack here:

Hi Tim,

I actually did purchase the Premium Pack. Maybe I forgot to install it or did not install it correctly.

What is the best way to check to see if the Premium Pack is currently installed, and if it is installed, which version is installed?

Hi Praveen,

Open H&M's Help -- if the Premium Pack is installed you will see a TOC entry for it, and the version number. See:

Thank you Tim and Martin!

I do have the Premium Pack installed. I just didn't realize that when I am publishing the project, I have to go to Open skin... and select a skin from the Premium Pack folder. (I was using the Responsive and Integrated skins from the default skins list thinking those were the Premium Pack skins.) The URLs are showing up as I wanted now.

Hi Praveen,

Note that you also need to configure the Premium Pack skin you are using before using it. For example you need to at least set the URL for your own logo and the email address for email feedback before putting it online. You can find the documentation in the Help+Manual Premium Pack chapter added to the main Help+Manual help when you install the pack. It is also available online here.
