Replacng a cropped image

Unread post by Marc »

When using the function to replace an image, the new image automatically is sized to the total size of the SnipSVG image. If the old image had been cropped in SnipSVG, this cropping is essentially lost.
Is there any way to update a cropped and annotated image by just exchanging the background image? HelpXPlain handles this brilliantly, so I was hoping in SnipSVG the function "Chance Image > Replace image from Clipboard" would do the same. Having a function to really just REPLACE the image without resizing it would be such a huge time saver when translating and updating your images created with SnipSVG...

I just experimented with this and as far as I can see Replace Image already does exactly what you want: If an image is cropped and does not fill the whole frame, using Replace Image with "From Clipboard" on it replaces it exactly in its cropped dimensions. You just have to select the image before choosing the function. Or are you expecting a crop to be applied to the replacement automatically? That's not going to happen, because in many cases it would be a different image. 8)

Yes, I was hoping that the same cropping is applied to the new image (which HelpXPlain does). This is needed SO often. Typical use cases are:
* There are some last minute changes to the software. So you need to update all of your images, but dont want to do repeat all of that cropping, annotating, etc. again. Rather just exchange the backgroud image and then you are done.
* Many help files need to be translated into several foreign languages. If you can just make a copy of the original cropped and post-edited images and than just exgange the background image this can save tons of time compared to repeating all steps again and again manually...

OK, I'll pass this on as a request.

Thank you Tim, I am sure that this would be a huge improvement for anyone who uses cropped images and needs to update or translate them.
In the meantime, for anyone interested here is the best workaround that I could figure out.

To replace a cropped background image:
Copy your new image to the clipboard.
In SnipSVG, press Shift+Ctrl+V to paste the image to a new tab.
On the new tab, select the image and again copy it to the clipboard. This step is important because only then SnipSVG will not resize your image later.
Delete the old background image.
Paste the new image from the clipboard.
Send the new image to the background.
Reposition the new image as needed.

Quite a few stepts, but at least this will keep your image size and all the things that you may have added on top of the background image, such as arrows, boxes, etc.
