I was going through an OEM manual and noticed that the page number of the pdf matched the actual page number of the document.

Can we do this?

Yes, and it's also recommended. However, it means that you must completely dispense with all custom page numbering options. Every single section of your PDF template must just have the plain vanilla page number variable, there must be no section numbering in the page numbers and no resetting of the page numbers anywhere. Then it works.
