Chapter_Heading not populating in Word Template

Unread post by Grant Harrington »

I'm using HM v8.1.0 Build 5536 and the stock Word template: Word-Template-Simple-US.docx and the Contents section doesn't list the Chapter Heading text

Code: Select all

<%CHAPTER_HEADING1%>
values, yet the main document does include the Chapter Heading text. I even copied/pasted the template text from the main document and pasted into the Contents page, to ensure it wasn't a stray/hidden space, and same results. Anything else to check?

That probably has nothing to do with your current issue, but your copy of Help+Manual 8 is verybadly out of date. The current version is 8.5.0 Build 5980, so you really do need to update right away. You can get the current installer here, provided your maintenance is up to date (check with Help > About):

https://www.helpandmanual.com/downloads.html?upd

If your maintenance has expired you can either extend your maintenance here, or download the most recent version covered by your maintenance here:

https://www.helpandmanual.com/downloads.html#oldver
and the stock Word template: Word-Template-Simple-US.docx and the Contents section doesn't list the Chapter Heading text <%CHAPTER_HEADING1%> values, yet the main document does include the Chapter Heading text. I even copied/pasted the template text from the main document and pasted into the Contents page, to ensure it wasn't a stray/hidden space, and same results. Anything else to check?
What has probably happened is that the table of contents object and/or the formula objects inside it containing the chapter objects have been damaged through accidental editing. The entire TOC placeholder is a Word table of contents object, and the entries within it are formula fields. You can learn how to set this up here in the help:

https://helpandmanual.com/help/hm_worki ... _docx.html

The easiest thing to do is to make a copy of the unedited version of the template file stored in \Templates\Word\ in the Help+Manual program directory. Open that in Word and copy the entire unedited table of contents object from there. Delete the damaged one in your template and paste in the original.
