Em dash formats poorly after published in a PDF

Unread post by Detroit »

Entering a character string, such as a space, followed by an em dash, and then followed by another space does not properly publish correctly in PDFs...

In the PDF, the em dash appears like an ordinary hyphen and an additional space is included after the lousy "em" dash.

The PDF's Document Properties show the Arial typeface used for the special character was TrueType (CID) with Identity-H encoding--as were all of the other typefaces used in the PDF.

The formatting appears OK in the other file formats, but not in the PDFs.

Are there any workarounds?

Hi Detroit,

Confirmed, we'll get onto this. You can work around this by using the shorter n-dash instead. Personally I also think that looks better than the long m-dash, which officially is supposed to be used without spaces on either side (but that doesn't help with this problem either).

Lacking the em dash (and possible other special characters) is like having a dead key on a keyboard or on a piano... One could modify the piece in order to avoid the dead key, but that, of course, is unacceptable for those who prefer to have the "full use" of the applicable instrument.

Hope that bug gets fixed, pronto!
