Subversion/Tortoise not recognized

Unread post by Christof Schardt »

Hello,
I have the newest Tortoise 1.14.9 installed, the Subversion Support is enabled in H&M.
However, he does not recognize the client. Under Start - version control, the SVN
Buttons are inactive and i read "no supported svn client installed...."

What can I do?

THanks, Christof

Hi Christof,

In Help+Manual 8 and earlier, SVN support depended on the current versions of the DLLs for communication with Tortoise, which Tortoise has stopped delivering for 32-bit programs in the 64-bit version of Tortoise required for current Windows versions. For a while it was possible to get these with a standalone installer available from Collabnet. However, Collabnet, like many other providers, has now exited the SVN business because SVN usage has diminished so far that it was no longer worth it for them.

The only solution available now to use SVN on Help+Manual 8 or earlier is to downgrade both your SVN installation and your Tortoise version to 1.9.1 or earlier (the two must match). You can get the older Tortoise versions here:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/tortoi ... /OldFiles/

In Help+Manual 9 this problem no longer arises, because there we have switched to the scripted interface to version control, which allows you to use the current version directly. If you do upgrade to Help+Manual 9 you also have the option of switching to Git, which is now much more widely supported than SVN.
